Chameleon Drains

Chameleon Drains are an innovative product from Turf Drainage Company of America. Chameleon Drains were originally designed for use on athletic fields where an open inlet could endanger an athlete or an animal, but an open inlet was the only way large amounts of surface water could be collected to prepare the field for play.

Chameleon Drains have a removable grass plug that fits above the inlet. If a rain event occurs that requires the removal of surface water, the grass plug is to be removed until the surface water is drained, and then replaced prior to the event. Thus, during the event, the basin essentially disappears. A third configuration allows for a temporary grate to be put in place. This configuration has been used on high profile courses that host PGA Tour events. The temporary grate is used during the "wet season" when drainage is a priority

The Turf Drain Chameleon Drain is a novel basin originally designed for use on baseball fields to quickly drain surface water without interfering with play. The Chameleon Drain is placed below grade and has a grass top during normal weather conditions. When rain causes standing water, the grass top is removed, and surface water is quickly drained so that play can resume. On golf courses, it can be used in high profile areas, such as tees or greens approaches, or areas that are visible on TV during tournament play. The basins have a temporary top that can be inserted for weeks at a time when prolonged rain periods make drainage more important than aesthetics.
